Album Description Winners of three PREMIOS DE LA MUSICA AWARDS (Spanish Academy of Musical Arts & Sciences) Lagrimas Negras, a collection of old standards performed by Cuban jazz pianist Bebo Valdes and Spanish flamenco vocalist Diego el Cigala. This was recorded at the suggestion of Hollywood Oscar Award-winning director, Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque), which has become a phenomenon in Spain. The result is a journey that discovers the essence of the Latino "love" song with connections to Cuba, Central and South America, and Spain. Picked by New York Times critic Ben Rattcliff as "the best album of the year", Lagrimas Negras has had an impressive debut. The album has never been out of the top 30 since its release in Spain over nine months ago, achieving double Platinum sales status. It has won five Amigo Awards, one Premio Ondas, and three Premios de la Musica Awards (including Best Album).
Amazon.com This album pairs one of the greatest flamenco singers of today, cantaor Diego El Cigala, with one of Cuba's finest Afro-Cuban pianists, Bebo Valdes. With Valdes (father of the great Chucho Valdes) born in 1918, there's a 40-year age difference between the pianist and the singer, but they do a fine job crossing generations and oceans to discover the commonalities between Caribbean and the Iberian music, coming up with a romantic marriage of the two cultures using rumbas, guajira, sons and boleros. All the songs are classics out of the Latin music tradition, using just a handful of players in support. Valdes's fingers are delicate and prone to dramatic flourishes; Cigala's voice is pure flamenco in its hoarse intonation, cadence and emotional outpourings. The two masters make the union work by focusing on the drama of the love songs--"Veinte Anos," "Inolvidable" and the title track are just three amazing examples--as fuel for some of the most exquisitely passionate music to come out in ages. --Tad Hendrickson

insanely catchy August 18, 2008 Others have amply covered the virtues of this album. The songs are good, but what really sets it apart is Bebo and Cigalla's phrasing. They're just brilliant. I have tried to remove the disk from the CD player, so far without success.
Curiosity killed the cat January 5, 2008 thats what I was thinking when I first saw this CD and deciding whether to buy it or not. A cuban piano player and a gypsy flamenco singer NAAA I don't think it's gonna work,I bought it any way..... I was familar with most of the songs Inolvidable, Lagrimas Negras and had heard them done by other artists many times. but this combination works and what is created is a haunting beautiful version of a song that will change you forever because these are the versions of the songs that will stick in your mind forever and when you hear them again being done by other arists they will not have that special tragic magic that will haunt you forever..... No other version of Lagrimas Negras will ever be good enough to compare....curiosity almost killed the cat but the magic in this CD will surely bring any cat back to life..
Fabulous Music August 5, 2007 This is one of the most exciting CDs I have bought in the last year. The paring of great musicians of differing musicaly styles and from such different generation is pure genius.
Beautiful synergy June 8, 2007 A unique combination of beautiful jazz piano music played by acclaimed Cuban Bebo Valdes with the sensuous hoarse voice of young Gypsy singer El Cigala. First heard them at a friend's house and could not wait until I purchased the CD for myself and to give to friends. Great selection and variety of songs. The nearest to perfect symbiosis I have ever seen in a collaboration between jazz and flamenco.
